Diwali - The Festival of Lights
Diwali is celebrated all over India and elsewhere in the world where Indians gather together. Traditionally known by its Sanskrit name Deepavali, it actually means "a row of lights". Although predominantly a Hindu festival, it is observed by Sikhs and Jains as well. In general, Diwali celebrates the triumph of light over darkness, goodness over evil and knowledge over ignorance. The story of its origins varies, depending on where you happen to be.
In northern India, the story goes that King Rama fought a lengthy war against Ravana, the demon king of Lanka. The festival is in honour of his victory, his homecoming with his wife, Sita, to Ayodhya and his coronation. In Gujarat, Lakshmi, the goddess of wealth, is the focus and in Bengal, the festival honours the goddess Kali, to some a violent creature and to others, the mother goddess.
No matter what the regional differences, Diwali means rebirth and people often wear new clothes to signify this, they also thoroughly clean their houses and in India, decorate their courtyards with patterns, known as "rangoli" created with powdered or diluted paint. To add to the festive air, doorways are draped with garlands of mango leaves and marigolds, known as "torans" It also means that winter is coming and seeds must be sown to ensure food supplies for the following year.
The actual date of Diwali varies according to the Hindu calendar but generally falls towards the end of October/beginning of November. The festival itself lasts for five days, each of which has designated rituals of worship to various gods and goddesses but it is the third day which includes the fun of processions and fireworks.
It is a time to exchange gifts with family and friends, somewhat like the Christian festival of
Christmas. Traditionally, houses are cleaned thoroughly then decorated with oil lamps called diyas and candles and streets are strung with fairy lights. The ground outside homes and temples is decorated with Rangoli patterns, often made with coloured rice and flour and water to attract the attention of the Goddess Lakshmi. Sweets and fire crackers are bought and food and clothes given to the poor.
It is the custom to give sweets, dried fruits or flowers as Diwali gifts when visiting, neighbours and relatives but in these modern times, the gifts are often rather more valuable such as jewellery, silk, leather or silver goods. For close family, even electronic goods such as a camera or television might be seen as appropriate.
There are a number of traditional sweet and savoury foods for Diwali. The recipes for these vary from family to family but will remain the same year after year.
Legend has it that Lord Shiva and his wife, the Goddess Parvati played dice on Diwali day and she decreed that gambling on Diwali night would ensure prosperity throughout the coming year. The influence of the goddess Lakshmi is considered to bring luck to gamblers and these days people play betting card games, in the hopes of being favoured by the goddess of wealth.

Santa Needs You To Save The North Pole!
Santa here - I need your help! The North Pole is starting to melt. Before long I may have to move house which will be hard because a rise in the sea level of 4 inches or so will put most of the planet underwater!
Lucky for me I have good people on my nice list like Richard Branson who has pledged to donate $3bn to help fight global warming. But that won't be enough!
We all have something called a carbon footprint. It's a way of measuring how much damage you cause to the environment through the car you drive, the type of paper you use, even the food you eat! If we all work together to make our carbon footprints smaller then we can help save our planet.
Some selfish people don't consider Global Warming an important issue. English TV presenter Jeremy Clarkson for instance, openly boasts about leaving the water running whilst cleaning his teeth. (It's a good thing he knows where the tap is because chances are, he'll be needing it to wash the coal off his hands on
Christmas morning) but here in the North Pole, I have an up close and personal perspective on our planet's rising temperatures.
I'm taking off the red and white suit for the day and donning a green one. Almost everything we do has an impact on the environment but some choices are better than others.
My scientist boffin elves have come up with a list of things we can all do. Following even just a few of these suggestions could help you get a place on Santa's Nice list.
1. Ride a bike. There are lots of reason to do so. Car emissions = a big carbon footprint, bike emissions = no carbon footprint and if you're not old enough to drive yet, then spending time on your bike rather than watching TV or playing on that Playstation will still save electricity. Then, there are benefits in terms of happiness - exercise not only gets you fit, it makes you happier too. Bikes are cool.

7. If it's yellow, let it mellow. Your toilet uses about 20-25% of the water you consume every day, cutting out the odd flush would make a significant difference to that.
8. Grow some tomatos or other vegetables. It's a fun thing to do with small children, they get the enjoyment of seeing something grow, you save money on groceries and Wal-Mart don't need to spend a fortune transporting fruit and veg thousands of miles over air land and sea in refrigerated units that are definetely not envirnmentally friendly! At the very least buy as much as you can from local producers especially your christmas dinner!
9. Recycle. Print on both sides of the paper, use the bottle bank, repair clothes, learn how to sew a button onto a shirt. Schools are always looking for paper for drawing - let them have some of yours from work rather than throwing it away.
10. Turn the heating down. Just one degree will make a difference and if you find that it doesn't make your life unbearable, try another degree. I live in the North Pole, I wear thick clothes and my thermost never goes past 20 degrees.
The best possible baby oil for your little one? Olive Oil. Take a tour of an eco-house, adopt an animal, there are a million things you can do. I've suggested ten, do five of them, heck just do one. You'll be saving the planet without having to wear your underpants outside of your trousers and you'll be closer to getting what you want for
Christmas.

The Life of a Working Caregiver
How can I talk with my Mother about her health? How do I approach Dad about his finances? Is my mother-in-law really able to live independently, and if so, who can I call on to visit her daily? How do I balance my job, my family responsibilities, my duties to my elder parent and still have time for me?
None of these questions have easy answers. There are no quick fixes, no one-stop solutions, no magic wand. But there are a lot of resources available, if we just know where to look, who to call, what questions to ask and how to approach the subject.
When my Mother moved to Phoenix to share my home in 1994, neither of us could visualize what the future held. At that point, she was mobile, she still had her own car, could get around on her own, could keep the house in order and did most of the cooking. As the years went by, she gave up driving, had balance problems which made mobility an issue, was no long puffy nippleser confident about balancing her own check book, and had trouble putting together a meal. We hired a housekeeper and a yard maintenance company. When I would go on vacation, we also hired a non-medical home care agency to look in on her daily. As her ability to do things decreased, the demands on my time increased. And I kept thinking, what would happen if the caregiver suddenly needed care?
And I had it easy! Why? Mom was healthy. She was able to get out of bed, take a shower (with modifications made to her bathroom), dress herself and get her own breakfast. She was an avid reader and kept me up to date on things in the news. In almost every sense of the word, we had to reverse our roles in life, and the transition required talking openly about each issue as it came up. Easy? No. Impossible? Again, no. But it does take time, patience and diplomacy.
So what do you do if you arent as lucky as I was? What if your parent or elder loved one needs constant care, has Alzheimers or dementia, cannot be left alone, or is not easy to get along puffy nipples with? Check into the non-medical home care agencies around your area. There are several excellent companies that offer a variety of services for a very reasonable price. How about adult day care as another option?
If a friend offers to help, dont hesitate to take them up on that offer. It took me a long puffy nipples time to learn this lesson, but once I accepted help from people who stood behind what they said, I felt a load being taken from my shoulders. Perhaps its having a friend whose Mother has long puffy nipples since passed, and adopting your Mom for a day, an afternoon, or even an hour for lunch is a special treat for both. Whatever it is, it equates to a bit of free time for you.
Next, approach your supervisor, manager or business owner and tell them your situation. Dont make excuses and dont take on an oh, poor me attitude. Just tell them honestly whats happening in your life. Ask for flexible work hours. Perhaps you have a job that can be done from home a day or two each week. If necessary, mention that you dont know of a physician who will see your Mom at 6:30 PM after you get off work. Therefore, you will, at times, have to take Mom to her appointments. Sometimes all you have to do is talk about it and help will be forthcoming. For those of you who work in positions that allow no flexibility, you may need to consider your priorities. Perhaps its time to make the decision of my mom or my job. If you reach that point, tell your employer of your decision. That could change the dynamics considerably; at least they would know you are serious, and will possibly reconsider their position.
Financially, the demands of caregiving can be draining. However, with proper planning, it doesnt have to be devastating. If Mom and Dad are still healthy and not needing care at this time, talk with them about long puffy nipples term care insurance. Find out what their financial situation is and if they will be financially able to provide for themselves if and when the time comes. If they wont discuss the issue (and believe me, a lot of elders absolutely refuse to talk about finances), maybe you need to consider paying for long puffy nipples term care coverage for them. And dont forget, caregivers need to take care of themselves. Treat yourself to lunch with a friend, a movie, an afternoon at the spa, a day trip; whatever it takes to get you away from the job at hand. Website Marketing: a First Glance
I recently started working as a consultant for MarketFinders, a Ventura County/ Santa Barbara marketing company in Southern California. Lynn Sarkany, founder and principal, communicated her interest in knowing more about web marketing as the interest in this "arcane art" is exponentially growing.
I said "arcane art" because, unlike conventional marketing, the approach can be quite different and unpredictable. In this article, I will review a few things that should or shouldn't be done in order to improve your site's prominence.
Let's assume that you do not have a website. Your first task is to hire a professional designer. Why do you ask? You could use one of those great designing programs, right? Well, you may have heard this before and it's not a myth: most of these programs generate unnecessary code that does not need to be there and may very well hurt your website. Search engines do prefer up-to-date clean code and a professional web designer is one of the most qualified people to do this. With a strong structure, your site will also be liked by spiders and bots (these are the programs gathering info for search engines) thus making it easier for it to be ranked at its value (given the algorithm used by the specific spider/bot). The higher the value and relevancy, the more likely others will view your site.
If you already have a website, several factors come into play, including age of site, website design, content dynamics, and any type of web marketing. A website professional should analyze your site, including its age, history, structure, and previous marketing attempts. From that point on, he/she should be in a position to tell you if your site needs structural work and how you should proceed to optimize your site.
Next, make sure search engines know who you are and where you are. In other words, make sure your contact information is complete with street address, phone number(s), fax (optional), and email address(es). Telling visitors who you are increases your site legitimacy and search engines, starting with Google, are starting to pay attention to that. The where is also important since some search engines, and most directories, offer local searches and listings; some phonebooks even have online versions! Why pass on this opportunity for additional traffic?
The first step after a design, or redesign, is to submit your site to search engines and directories. Some people will tell you that its not necessary or that it could even hurt an existing site. Until I see concrete proof supporting these facts, Id rather be safe than sorry and submit my sites! Furthermore, search engines, at least the major ones, will not penalize you for submitting your site after a redesign; how could they consider it spamming?
Linking (or getting other websites to point to your website) is an ongoing process. You need a consistent linking strategy where links are added progressively. Adding a few relevant links (for example, from MD sites if youre a physician) regularly (weekly or monthly) will show your site is growing at a healthy pace, free of spam and unethical tactics.
In a similar fashion, black hat tactics (things that some people do to trick search engines in order to achieve better rankings) should be avoided at all costs. Your site may end up being banned from search engines all together. I dont think the long term consequences are worth the immediate profit.
These two points are quite important because algorithms will sniff out (hopefully sooner than later) sites who use link farms (large amount of links pointing to one site) for sheer unethical- profit and spamming, or sites that use black hat tactics.
The same way you need to build inbound links (those coming to your site), you need to develop relevant content, which visitors should find of interest. When it comes to marketing your site, nothing is more true than Content is King. Good, fresh, content will not only keep visitors coming back but search engines may very well index the corresponding pages.
If your content is newsworthy, or specific to an industry, you may consider doing a press release. This is a tool that may bring your site and your business great exposure.
You may also post on forums and blogs in your field of business but please, do not spam other websites and respect their posting rules and policies. The goal is to build relationships which could lead to more traffic and links.
Most strategies rely on several tools: Search Engine Optimization, forum posts/blogging, press releases, linking/tagging (where people eartag your site within a community), email newsletters and/or mass emails, MySpace account (or similar), online ads, and paid advertising.
Quite simply, the web is so large that youd loose your marbles if you tried everything to market your site. My advice to you is start small and build up on your results. Above all, track the return on any strategy you may use and determine whether or not it is a viable option for your business. People like the idea of advertising on the web and get caught up in the frenzy but sometimes forget the essential: Did it get my business noticed? Was it worth my investment?

Finding the right gift for my dad, fathers-in-law, brothers and brothers-in-law is always a little challenging for me. These guys don't ask for much. As a group, they are pretty content. They work hard and if they get an idea for something they want, they figure out a way to get it. When I finally think I've got their styles down, they change their whole look. I'm serious! And if I even dared to venture into the world of gadgets, I am sure to pick out the ones they'll never use.
Well here are ten man holiday gift ideas I have found that almost any guy would like. Quite a few are humorous, maybe because my favorite thing to do for all these hard working men, is lighten them up.
1. T-shirt With a Funny Saying - Look online for a company that specializes in unique shirts or create your own with fabric paints or markers. You can put a joke with the first line on the front of the t-shirt and the punch line on the back OR you can find humorous quotes from one of this man's favorite authors, politicians or celebrities. One idea is to take a solid colored t-shirt and put a big gold star on it that says, "TV Sheriff" with the words "REMOTE CONTROL" on the pocket. Whatever saying you choose, make him extra happy by getting the right size t-shirt. My husband is a smaller guy who really appreciates a shirt that fits him properly, after receiving many that could fit two of him! Don't forget that 100% cotton will shrink some the first time it is washed.
2. Rare Indoor Plant - Where I see caring for plants as a chore, many guys I know look at it as an art form. My brother-in-law collects bonsai trees, carefully working them into the shape he plans. He shows us pictures of miniature oaks and maples with the button sized leaves turning gold and red in the fall. My husband enjoys miniature cactus and has kept one growing in a tiny cup of sand since we got married almost ten years ago. Read up on plants that would match with your guy's lifestyle, decor or interests. Consider a plant from his favorite country or one mentioned in a book or movie he likes.
3. Memory Film - Collect slides, photos or video footage of him as a child on one video or DVD. Put it together yourself using a home editing program, order a package deal from a reputable editing company or hire someone you know to do it for you. Add his favorite music as the background sound.
4. Cure for Memory Loss - If there is an item he is always losing, get him one for every room of the house...and the car, if need be! For instance, guitar picks (that would be for my husband), pairs of scissors, nail clippers, slippers, tools, vitamins, ...you get the idea.
6. Night of Laughs - Order him a new or used DVD of his favorite comedian doing a stand up routine. Give him tickets to a local comedy club. Download hilarious clips from the internet, creating your own collection. Whatever you do, make him laugh.
7. Survival Bag - Put together a kit for whatever hobby or activity he likes best. One lady I heard of did this very creatively for all the hunters in her family. She took cotton camouflage fabric and sewed very simple small bags, using jute twine to make a drawstring. At a discount store she found items to fill the bags with such as: utensils, matches, canned meat or jerky, snacks, tooth brush, comb, soap, washcloth, tissues, first aid supplies. Since she bought these items in bulk, the cost was very reasonable per bag. I would add a different sheet of jokes for every guy, printed off the internet, to give them entertainment for the long hours of sitting. She painted each hunter's name on his bag so they could tell them apart. The guys loved them!
8. Relaxation at Its Best - There isn't a guy I know who wouldn't want a really comfortable recliner. You can find sales on new ones all the time or if you really need to save, check out the classified ads in your newspaper or some good local used furniture stores. The ones I like to visit regularly have nice recliners at very discounted prices. Whatever you do, sit in the chair before you buy it. Some are more comfortable than others.
9. Special Delivery - Find a toy truck he would like - dumptruck, low rider, antique pickup - at a toy store or antique store. Fill the bed of the truck with all his favorite goodies such as candy bars, homemade cookies, caramels, etc. If you really want to surprise him, hide a gift certificate underneath all the treats.
10. One Man's Treasure - What does this guy collect and treasure? Make him a display or collage to put up in his office, garage or room. You may need a shelf to hold things, a board to pin items to, a scrapbook, or a closed cabinet to protect his collection. If you can't think of anything he collects, it may be that he is like my dad, who treasures his friends more than any of his "stuff". He would enjoy a framed collage with photos of his hundreds of friends.

Then write each move onto a sheet of paper in the order taken out from the hat and choose one night per week eg. a Saturday evening that all the family come together to watch the Christmas movie and then chat and discuss it after. A great idea is to ask each family member what they thought the message of the movie was for them and how they could incorporate the gift of the message they found in the movie into their Christmas this festive season.
2. Read some Christmas stories together: while time is at a premium in today's busy world reading a short inspirational Christmas story together as a family has many benefits. This is a great way to create some magic and close family time together. Here we can recapture the magic of an old-fashion Christmas. You can go to the local library and pick up an array of wonderful short Christmas story books. Make sure you get a copy of the classic A Christmas Carol' by Charles Dickens. This is a classic for each Christmas. It is magical for both young and old and will transport you to a magical wonderland. This is quality time shared together that will be remembered loving as a cherished family tradition. This is a really economical way to create festive fun, meaning and togetherness.
3. Make Christmas ornaments together: back in the early days when Christmas ornaments first appeared they were made from hard cookies. This is inexpensive and easy to do and the whole family can be involved and have lots of fun in the process. There are some great Christmas decoration and cookie recipe books available. Go to the library and find some hard cookie recipes such as hard gingerbread. Buy the ingredients and look for some decorations to add such as color for the icing sugar, sprinkles and other cake or festive decorations like mistletoe. Purchase some string or ribbon to thread through the cookie to place on the tree once made. Organize a cooking day with the whole family getting together for around 2-3 hours of focused fun. Get everyone to take it in turns to stir the mixture from east to west 4 times then make a wish, then the next person clockwise takes their turn in stirring the mixture. Make it lots of fun. You are creating magic moments and lasting memories. Once cooked get each person to choose a base color for their icing so that everyone will know it relates to them. Then go ahead and decorate, encourage everyone to be creative and have fun. Lastly once dried, string them and hang them on the tree. Imagine each year the memories and stories of each decoration created by each family member!
